Your Ultimate Guide to the Top Swimming Spots

drinking beer on a beach

Summers can be brutal in Tbilisi. It can easily get to the upper 30s (that’s around 100 in Americanese) and it has a touch of humidity or smog or whatever unregulated thing is hanging in the air, creating a kind of oven effect. Luckily, unlike most places in Europe, restaurants and cafes often have air conditioning, so it’s never too horrendous.

When I lived through a Ukrainian winter, I knew that alcohol can indeed be your friend. One shot when leaving the apartment building can give you a casual ignorance of the fierce freeze. Meanwhile, in a Tbilisi summer, and icy cold brew can be your key to relaxation. But when you’re traveling with kids, or you’re a Muslim, or maybe you just prefer to get wet to cool down, you’ve got to hit some pools.

I’ve got your back. I’ve a total list here with all the swimming holes in Tbilisi, from the au naturelle to the haughty taught.

Key Takeaways

Diverse Options: Tbilisi offers a wide range of swimming spots, from exciting water parks like Gino Paradise to serene natural escapes like Lisi Lake and luxury hotel pools.

Family Fun vs. Serious Swims: For a full day of family entertainment, Gino Paradise is the top choice. For dedicated lap swimmers, professional facilities like the Vake Swimming Pool or the Olympic Complex are ideal.

Accessible Luxury: Many high-end hotels, like the Radisson Blu and Sheraton Grand, offer day passes to their pools, allowing you to enjoy a luxury experience without booking a room.

Understanding Tbilisi's Aquatic Offerings

Tbilisi does have a full offering of swimming outlets, though not all of them are democratically priced, as many are just profoundly and inexplicably expensive. Maybe it’s to ensure the facility won’t be crowded or whatever? Who knows. But if you’re willing to pay, you’ll mostly get what you want. There are a few interesting alternatives to sitting at a swimming pool, like laying out at a lake (next blog) or even a water park, which is, interestingly, a much cheaper alternative to most pools. I’ve divided the listing like this:

  • Water Parks: Designed for maximum fun and excitement, water parks are perfect for families and thrill-seekers. They feature numerous slides, diverse pools, and often offer a full day of entertainment.

  • Hotel Pools: Many hotels in Tbilisi provide a touch of luxury and convenience. Their well-maintained pools often come with additional amenities like spas and gyms, and some offer day passes, making a premium experience accessible even without an overnight stay.

  • Sports Complexes: Ideal for serious swimmers or those focused on fitness, these facilities typically feature Olympic-sized pools and professional environments, often including comprehensive wellness amenities.

Tbilisi’s Waterpark

Gino Paradise: The Ultimate Aquatic Oasis

Gino Paradise is a 13-hectare aquatic wonderland situated near the Tbilisi Sea and is, I think, the best Tbilisi has to offer on the water-front. It's the largest and most popular aqua park in Tbilisi. Especially since the water park at Didube shut down during covid.

The park boasts a decent array of key features and facilities. Its pools include a wavy pool equipped with a climbing wall, a slow-going "wild" river for a float, a panorama pool featuring a bar and sea views (though it featured a construction wall instead when I was there), and a dedicated outdoor children's space with various slides and warm water for the little ones. For those seeking a bit of rejuvenation, hot tubs with hydro massage are available, and there's a 25-meter Olympic pool spposedly for serious swimmers... but this is Georgia so mostly it's just teenagers in the way.

Gino Paradise

My kid's favorite feature was the wave pool, and every time the signal went off for the waves to begin he'd drag us back out there. Absolute bonkers about it.

And there's also Eastern Europe's tallest 31-meter toboggan, which offers 6 tunnel slides and 5 different speeds.

A large selection of open slides ensures fun for every age group.

The slingshot and a steep-ish slide

Beyond just swimming, the complex offers a comprehensive wellness experience, including a wellness center, spa lounges, a private seating garden, a fitness room, and a swimming academy, which are all at different prices. It even features 17 different types of saunas, a small lake for trout fishing (with the option for on-site preparation), and 12 food courts to satisfy any craving. Additionally, Gino Paradise provides access to a safe, well-equipped beach on the Tbilisi Sea, complete with sunbeds, showers, and dressing rooms. This extensive list of facilities means the place has something for everyone—from families and thrill-seekers to those seeking relaxation—all within a single destination. This comprehensive offering is a primary driver of its popularity, as it allows visitors to fulfill multiple leisure needs efficiently, providing a high perceived value despite the admission fee.

Getting there is not at all straightforward. It is located on Beshenova Street, adjacent to the Tbilisi Sea. It’s not so accessible to the public transit, though if you can get to Station’s Square you can either get a cheap enough taxi or take the 333 bus.

Admission and pricing for Gino Paradise are set at 99 GEL (approximately $36.7 USD) on weekends, with a sale price of 74.25 GEL (approximately $27.5 USD) also available. Which makes it weirdly one of the cheaper places to get wet and lie out, cheaper than just swimming pools.

Children under 5 years old are granted free entry.

Tbilisi Sea Club: Exclusive Lakeside Leisure

Located directly on the shores of the Tbilisi Sea, the Tbilisi Sea Club provides a dedicated and well-equipped environment for both relaxation and active water activities. It offers specific amenities and services for a fee, moving beyond simple water access to provide a comprehensive leisure package.

The key features and facilities of the Tbilisi Sea Club include two pools, one of which is specifically designed for children. There is also a spacious sunbathing area situated on a floating dock, so you can get a sunburn in a serene environment.

For those seeking more active pursuits, the club offers water slides, children's playgrounds, and opportunities for various water sports. Lessons for sailing, water skiing, and swimming are also available. The club is well-equipped with amenities, including cafes and a large restaurant capable of accommodating up to 1000 people, making it suitable for hosting events like weddings and birthdays.

Public transit there is as equally a pain as Gino and you might as well just take a taxi.

Admission and pricing for entry is 40 GEL (approximately $14 USD) per person on the weekend, which typically includes free parking, a sunbed, and access to the outdoor pool and the Tbilisi Sea. Children are usually admitted for free.

The Tbilisi Sea Club is best for families with children, couples, and individuals looking for a managed, amenity-rich beach club experience on the Tbilisi Sea. It is ideal for those who wish to combine swimming with sunbathing and other water sports. The club offers a more private and organized experience compared to the free public beaches on the Tbilisi Sea, making the fairly low entrance fee (for Tbilisi pools) maybe worth the while.

Sport Center Swimming Pools

Vake Swimming Pool and Fitness Centre: The Professional's Choice

Established in 1965, the Vake Swimming Pool and Fitness Centre is widely regarded as one of the best and most popular swimming pools in Georgia. It is renowned for its long history and professional staff, and unwavering commitment to cleanliness and safety. This facility has also hosted numerous significant sports championships, cementing its reputation.

The key features and facilities at Vake Swimming Pool center around its impressive 50-meter indoor pool, which is often described as the cleanest and clearest swimming pool in Georgia. That’s about all I can tell you since I haven’t been there. The place is indoor, so it’s less about summer fun and more about lap swimming.

Getting there is pretty easy as it’s just past Vake Park on Chavchavadze Ave. 49B. It is easily accessible by various public transport options, including bus lines (345) from Vake or Rustaveli, or by taxi.

Admission and pricing for a one-day entrance pass is 100 GEL (approximately $37 USD), which includes access to the swimming pool, sauna, and fitness club. For children aged 8 to 18 years, admission is 50 GEL (approximately $18.5 USD) per day. Various monthly and yearly passes are also available, offering better value for frequent visitors.

Neptune Sport Complex: All-Season Aquatic Fitness

Neptune Sport Complex is a full-service, all-season sports and wellness complex in Tbilisi. It stands as one of the city's largest gym facilities, providing an extensive range of swimming, exercise, and relaxation amenities. It’s got a retractable roof, which makes it accessible year round, and also explains the whopping 100 GEL a visit price tag. You can probably guess that I haven’t been here either!

The key features and facilities at Neptune include versatile pools: a 25-meter main pool and a 12-meter children's pool, both equipped with a retractable roof. This innovative design allows for open-air swimming and sunbathing during the summer months.

The complex also offers a comprehensive fitness and spa experience, featuring a state-of-the-art gym, a wellness area with Finnish and Turkish saunas, a steam room, and massage services. For those interested in structured exercise, Neptune provides a diverse range of fitness classes, including pilates, spinning, Latino dance, boxing, and aqua fitness, along with individual swimming lessons from professional trainers. A café on-site serves wholesome dishes, catering to the nutritional needs of its patrons.

Getting there is easy, and the same as Tbilisi Swimming Pool.

Olympic Complex (Isani): For Serious Swimmers

The Olympic Complex in Isani features a 50-meter, 8-lane pool, serving as the primary training ground for the Georgian water polo team. This facility is a key destination for professional and serious swimmers.

The key features and facilities include its main attraction: a 50-meter, 8-lane Olympic pool. It is important to note that this pool often has a water polo court set up, which means lanes might run width-ways (approximately 22 meters) during certain times. However, staff can typically open up a full 50-meter lane upon request, particularly in the evenings. Access to a gym is usually included with pool passes, and the complex is noted for its decent changing rooms.

Getting there is feasible, though it requires some travel. The complex is located at 5 Malxazis Turn (მალხაზის შესახვევი). It is about a 15-minute walk from the Isani Metro stop, and public buses also run from there directly to the pool.

Admission and pricing for a two-hour pass is 20 GEL (approximately $7 USD) and you can also get a membership for 220 GEL a month.

Krtsanisi Residence Pool (Sport Time): Scenic Urban Escape

Located on the edge of the city in Krtsanisi and still under construction despite being open, the Krtsanisi Residence Pool, or Sport Time, offers a swimming experience with picturesque views of the surrounding landscape and lush trees. This spot provides a refreshing escape amidst the urban bustle, combining relaxation with convenient amenities.

The key features and facilities include a spacious outdoor swimming pool measuring 21m x 7m with a depth ranging from 1.3m to 1.9m. The facility is equipped with a beach bar and cafeteria, ensuring refreshments are readily available. Access to the fitness facility is also included with the pool entry, offering a comprehensive wellness option for visitors.

Getting there involves traveling to the Krtsanisi area, which is on the edge of the city. While specific public transport routes are not detailed, it is likely best accessed by taxi or private car from the city center.

Admission and pricing for daily entry to the outdoor swimming pool are 30 GEL (approximately $11 USD) on weekdays and 45 GEL (approximately $15 USD) on weekends. Children under 3 years old are admitted free, and minors under 12 years old can enter for 15 GEL (approximately $5.5 USD).

Hotel Swimming Pools

Holiday Inn Tbilisi Pool Garden: Luxury & Convenience

The Holiday Inn Tbilisi is home to one of the city's most luxurious outdoor pools, distinguished by its natural wood flooring and decorative trees that frame the poolside area. This creates a refreshing and aesthetically pleasing urban escape. This pool, along with those at other prominent hotels like Radisson Blu, The Biltmore, and Wyndham Grand, exemplifies a growing trend where luxury hotel amenities are made accessible to the public through day passes. This model provides a premium swimming experience without the full cost of an insanely overpriced overnight stay, thereby enhancing Tbilisi's appeal as a destination with diverse recreational options. The flexible pricing structure, including weekday/weekend variations and discounts for children, is designed to attract day visitors and foster a competitive environment among hotels for external guests.

The key features and facilities include a seasonal outdoor pool measuring 25m x 7m x 1.4m. As part of a reputable hotel, day entry typically grants access to the hotel's sauna and fitness facilities. The hotel also offers convenient amenities such as a buffet breakfast (available for a surcharge), a bar/lounge, and a snack bar/deli. Guest reviews frequently highlight the pool, location, and staff as positive aspects of the experience.

Getting there is easy due to its convenient location at 1, 26 May Square, Saburtalo. It is readily accessible by public transport, with Tsereteli Station being a 20-minute walk away, and its proximity to Tbilisi State University. Taxis also provide an easy means of transport.

From what I can find, admission and pricing for daily entry to the Pool Garden are about 100 GEL.

Radisson Blu Iveria Hotel Pool: Rooftop Views & Urban Luxury

The Radisson Blu Iveria Hotel, a 5-star property located in Old Tbilisi and much better than its Batumi counterpart, offers a truly luxurious swimming experience. For luxury hotels, the swimming pool is not merely a facility but an integral part of a broader, high-quality "experience." The pool contributes significantly to the overall allure and perceived value of the hotel, even for non-guests seeking a day of leisure. This approach leverages amenities like pools with stunning views to attract both staying guests and local patrons, effectively tapping into the "experience economy" where consumers are willing to pay for memorable moments and premium services.

I’ve been there once a long time ago and somebody else was paying, so I had a great time. The place is clean and serves good drinks. I wouldn’t say it’s for “family fun”, none of the hotel pools really are (unless you’re staying there), but it is fun.

It’s probably around 100 GEL these days too.

Sheraton Grand Tbilisi Metechi Palace: Luxury & Comprehensive Wellness

The Sheraton Grand Tbilisi Metechi Palace, another massive 5-star hotel, offers a luxurious and comprehensive wellness experience with both indoor and seasonal outdoor swimming pools. Located in Avlabari, it provides stunning panoramic views of the city and the historic Old Town, making it an appealing urban retreat for both guests and day visitors.

The key features and facilities at the Sheraton Grand Tbilisi Metechi Palace include an indoor pool, a seasonal outdoor pool, and a dedicated children's pool, catering to all ages. The hotel boasts a full-service spa, a 24-hour health club, and a cutting-edge fitness center equipped with the latest cardio and strength training equipment. Visitors can also enjoy a jacuzzi, grotto, steam room, and sauna, along with a spacious relaxation area. Additional amenities include a poolside bar, a restaurant, and free self-parking.

Getting there is convenient due to its location in Old Tbilisi. It is easily accessible by public transport, with the 300 Aragveli subway station just a 9-minute ride from Station Square 1. Various bus routes also serve the area, and taxis offer a quick 7-8 minute ride from the city center.

Admission and pricing for an all-inclusive day pass is 100 GEL (approximately $25.9 USD).  They feature DJ parties on Fridays.

Essential Tips for Your Tbilisi Swim Day

To ensure a comfortable and safe swimming experience in Tbilisi, consider the following essential tips:

Best Times to Visit:

Summer Season (June-August): This period is when most outdoor pools and water parks are at their prime since Tbilisi is a virtual oven, offering the most enjoyable conditions for cooling off.

Weekdays vs. Weekends: Pools and water parks like Gino Paradise can get crowded on weekends, though Gino's location tends to keep the crowd down a bit. Weekdays generally offer a more relaxed and less congested experience, allowing for greater enjoyment of the facilities.

What to Pack:

Sunscreen: Given Tbilisi's hot summers and ample sunshine, sunscreen is an absolute necessity for outdoor swimming to protect the skin from harmful UV rays.

Towels: While some facilities, such as the Vake Swimming Pool, provide towels, it's always a good idea to bring your own.

Cash (Georgian Lari - GEL): Although many establishments accept card payments, smaller vendors at lakes or specific fees (like the doctor's note required at some Olympic pools) might necessitate cash. Public transport also operates using a unified card system or requires exact cash fares.

Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial, particularly at outdoor locations with limited shade, where prolonged exposure to the sun can lead to dehydration.

Swim Cap: Certain professional pools may enforce a requirement for swim caps for hygiene purposes. It is advisable to check with the facility beforehand or carry one.

General Safety and Etiquette:

Doctor's Note: Don't be surprised if a swimming pool requires an additional "doctor's note" provided for a fee onsite. This is usual and costs around 15 GEL or so.

Europark Note: As of July 21, 2024, Europark is no longer operational, and this guide focuses on currently available options.

Tbilisi truly offers a diverse array of swimming experiences, catering to every preference and desire. Whether one seeks a full day of family fun, a peaceful retreat into nature, a rigorous fitness session, or a touch of urban luxury, Tbilisi's swimming spots provide ample opportunity. So, pack your swimwear, grab your towel, and prepare to beat the heat while creating unforgettable aquatic memories in Georgia's vibrant capital!
